In my world, there are several phrases that make NO sense. They're just a collection of meaningless words strung together. One of those phrases is...

"... too much garlic."

But no. I've never smelled wild garlic in the woods.

I totally agree with you. Love garlic!

This one doesn't really taste like garlic though. I'd say the difference in taste is similar to onion/spring onion. The Latin name (allium ursinum) translates to "bear leek" - same as in German. The smell and taste is difficult to describe.

We have the same problem in Italian. Have a nice Sunday you too

Of course, yes ... it's a difficult one. I mean every noun has a gender as well. It might be an impossible one to solve.

I'd need a picture of what you call wild garlic, cuz what we call that is no relation to garlic, nor an allium, but an invasive biennial that has round scalloped leaves. https://www.nature.org/en-us/about-us/where-we-work/united-states/indiana/stories-in-indiana/garlic-mustard/#:~:text=This%20plant%20spreads%20its%20seeds,for%20moisture%20and%20vital%20nutrients.

Your walk sounds so lovely but for the steep start. And of course you would figure out the faster way home!

The book store will be clamoring for your book when the time comes.

Here's the Latin name of it: Allium ursinum - I think that's easiest.

I did send you a picture Zoë. It's not the one you mentioned.

Thanks Linda. Yes, amazon is the plan.

I love the way your mind wanders from one topic to another so effortlessly. I agree the pronouns issue is tricky especially in other than English I think. Hugs!😘

Thanks Judith.

My brain is exhausting 🙄. Writing helps.

Thanks Alan.

Well, since there is no answer yet, people do seem to try and avoid the topic. As a linguist I see the problem, but making our language less gender-based might just be necessary. I haven't really read up on where we stand at the moment. It's an ongoing discussion. I'll update this at some point. I remember reading people using they/them in German - the actual English words. Could be a way to go. Like an easy way out so we don't have to rethink our language ...
